On August 1, 2014, a portion of the largest urban coastal hill in the country located in Thane district was separated, leading to the creation of Palghar, the 36th new district of Maharashtra. The work of the new district commenced on August 1, 2014, in the presence of the then Chief Minister and the then Minister of Revenue. Palghar is the 36th district in the state. The total population of Palghar district is 2,999,428. The district has a total of eight talukas: Jawhar, Mokhada, Talasari, Vasai, Vikramgad, Palghar, Dahanu, and Wada.

Out of the total geographical area of Palghar district, 469,699 hectares consist of a total of 1007 villages and 467 gram panchayats.

The literacy rate in the district is 66.65%. The literacy rate for men is 72.23% and for women, it is 59.28%.

To the east of the district are Thane and Nashik, to the west is the Arabian Sea, to the south are Mumbai, Thane, and to the north is Valsad (Gujarat), Dadra and Nagar Haveli. The coastline of Palghar is 112 km long. Palghar is adorned with the natural beauty that attracts tourists, featuring the Arabian Sea beaches to the west and the Sahyadri mountain ranges to the east.

In Palghar district, there are forts like Vasai, Arnala, Gambhirgad, Tarapur, Kaladurg, Kelwa, Kamandurg, and Shirgaon. The Jivdani temple in Vasai and the Mahalaxmi temple in Dahanu are the spiritual heritage of the district. The Palghar district has a tribal population. Warli painting and Tarpa dance are part of the tribal cultural heritage. Gholwad in Dahanu taluka is famous for chickoo production.
