Taluka Overview

Wada Taluka is included inPalghar District and Wada subdivision. It is in the eastern region in the Palghar district. Wada Taluka shares its southeastern border with Thane district, its eastern border with Mokhada Taluka, and is adjacent to Vikramgad and Jawhar Talukas in the north. The western border of Wada Taluka is shared with Palghar Taluka, and thePalghar district headquarters is 46 km away from Wada.

According to the 2011 Census, the total population of Wada Taluka is 1,78,370, with a literacy rate of 63.15%. Wada Taluka consists of 7 circles respectively Wada, Kudus, Kone, Kanchad, Khanivali, Met and Mandava.

Wada Taluka covers a geographical area of 70,043 hectares and comprises 172 revenue villages and 84 gram panchayat. Wada Nagar Panchayat has jurisdiction of the town’s civic population.

One of the notable religious sites in Wada Taluka is the ancient Shankar Temple at Tilase village. A fair is organized at Tilase temple annually on the occasion of Mahashivratri, attracting thousands of devotees. Nearby, there is also well known Vitthal-Rukhmini temple.

Adjacent to Wada Taluka are Tansa, Bhatsa, Lower, Middle, and Upper Vaitarna dams, which are major sources of drinking water supply for Mumbai and Thane cities.

Wada hosts Maharashtra’s largest wholesale market for fireworks.

History

Wada taluka established during the British era. The tahsil headquarter building constructed in 1902, remains structurally strong to the this day.

Cultural Heritage

The majority of Wada Taluka’s population consists of Varli, Katkari, and MahadevKoli tribes, classified as Scheduled Tribes. The tribal communities have expressed their lifestyles through Warli art and Tarpa dance.

Warli painting is an ancient form of tribal art that dates back to 1100 AD.

The Warli painting, which depict the traditional lifestyle and cultural beliefs, are an important part of the tribal communities identity.

The tribal communitiesuse natural colour made from materials like rice flour, charcoal and mud to create their famous Warli painting.

These paintings have gain popularity both in India and abroad.
